Russian Pyramid - History and Rules

The Russian Pyramid, also known as "Russian Billiards" or "Russian Pool," is a popular billiards variation that originated in Russia. This form of billiards differs significantly from traditional pool and snooker games and is characterized by its unique history, rules, and special features.

History of Russian Pyramid:
The Russian Pyramid has a long history dating back to the 18th century. Billiard games were first introduced to Russia during the reign of Peter the Great in the 18th century, but they were heavily influenced by European versions. The Russian Pyramid, as we know it today, only developed further in the 19th century.

Over time, special tables and rules were created for Russian Billiards, and it evolved into an independent variation of the billiard sport. The Russian Pyramid grew in popularity and became a beloved pastime in Russia and several neighboring countries.

Game Rules:
The Russian Pyramid is played on a special billiard table with a larger playing surface than traditional pool tables. The table measures 12 x 6 feet. The billiard balls are larger and heavier than those used in other billiard games.

The basic rules of Russian Pyramid are as follows:

Objective of the Game: The main goal of the game is to be the first player to reach a predetermined number of points or to pot all of one’s balls.

Game Balls: The Russian Pyramid uses 15 numbered balls, which are divided into the colors yellow, red, and/or white.

Opening: The game begins with the balls set up in a special pyramid formation on the table.

Potting: Players take turns attempting to pot their own balls. They must always hit the lowest-numbered ball first.

Scoring: Each ball has a specific point value, with the white ball being worth the most. Players collect points by potting their balls.

Penalties: There are special rules and penalties for fouls, such as hitting the wrong ball or the ball leaving the playing surface.

Winner: The game ends when a player reaches the predetermined number of points or has potted all balls. The player with the most points or the winning ball play wins the match.

Special Features:
A unique characteristic of the Russian Pyramid is the use of larger balls and smaller pockets, which makes the game more challenging.

There is also a special variation called "Kare" or "Carom," where the balls are placed on the table without using the traditional pyramid formation.

The Russian Pyramid requires a high level of precision and control, as the balls are larger and the pockets smaller, increasing the difficulty.

This billiard game is extremely popular in Russia and has also gained a growing following in several other countries.

The Russian Pyramid is a fascinating and demanding billiard variation with a long and rich history. It requires skill, strategy, and precision, and its unique charm sets it apart from other billiard games. If you have the chance to try this game, you will surely enjoy its variety and challenge.
